Researchers at the Geophysical Laboratory (GL) of the Carnegie Institution of Washington (CIW) and the Geodynamics Research Center (GRC) of Ehime University are intellectual leaders in a variety of chemical, physical, and biological topics in the natural and applied sciences. To highlight the forefront of research at these institutions and foster scientific exchange between them, CIW-GL hosted a GL-GRC Inter-Institutional Science Symposium in September 19-21, 2011. The range of topics was intentionally broad—designed to showcase ongoing research and bolster international collaboration—and included a handful of presentations and posters relating to Earth’s deep carbon cycle. An emphasis was placed on student and postdoctoral researcher talks, although several senior faculty were invited to give presentations.
