Earth Materials Data Infrastructure Effort

On May 24, 2012, the Deep Carbon Observatory Secretariat hosted the inaugural meeting of the Founders' Committee of the Earth Materials Data Infrastructure (EMDI) effort. The purpose of the EMDI is to link relevant existing databases related to mineralogy, petrology, volcanology, and thermochemistry into a single data framework. A comprehensive data infrastructure will promote interdisciplinary communication and collaborative science. It will become an engine of creative new research and will empower the broader scientific community and will expand scientific frontiers.

The inaugural EMDI meeting included Elizabeth Cottrell (Smithsonian Institution), Robert Downs (University of Arizona), Peter Fox (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), Mark Ghiorso (University of Washington), Robert Hazen (Carnegie Institution of Washington), and Kerstin Lehnert (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory). Russell Hemley, Director of the Geophysical Laboratory, presented an opening greeting. DCO staff, including Craig Schiffries (DCO Director), Andrea Mangum (DCO Program Manager), and Lauren Cryan (Program Associate), also attended the meeting.
