Message from the Director

The Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO) has ambitious plans for 2013. We look forward to the release of Carbon in Earth, a 700-page book edited by Robert Hazen, Adrian Jones, and John Baross. This volume in theReviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry  (RiMG) series contains 20 papers related to many of DCO’s decadal goals. The book will provide a benchmark for our current knowledge of Earth’s deep carbon—both for the DCO and the broader scientific community.

Carbon in Earth will be released during the DCO International Science Meeting at the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. on 3-5 March 2013. The meeting will also feature a series of short presentations on deep carbon science highlights and discoveries by international experts who span DCO's Science Directorates (Extreme Chemistry and Physics; Reservoirs and Fluxes; Deep Energy; and Deep Life) as well as cross-directorate research and groundbreaking instrumentation. Participants will discuss DCO’s ongoing activities and plans for the future.

The DCO International Science Meeting will bring together DCO’s Science Advisory Committee with representatives of DCO research projects as well as other experts and leaders of the scientific community. Guest speakers will include Frank Press, President of the U.S. National Academy of Science from 1981-1993 and Science Advisor to the President of the United States from 1977-1980; Marcia McNutt, Director of the U.S. Geological Survey from 2009-2013; and Wendy Harrison, Director of the Earth Science Division of the U.S. National Science Foundation.
