APS: 2014-06-02 (RPI)
Abstract: To continue to lead the data science and management dimensions of the Deep Carbon Observatory.
The Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO), with four Science Communities (Deep Energy, Deep Life, Extreme Physics and Chemistry, and Reservoirs and Fluxes; http://deepcarbon.net/), is approaching the midpoint of its decadal initiative. DCO’s ultimate aim is to transform the scientific and public understanding of carbon in the complex deep Earth system. Using data obtained by experimental, observational and computational means for extreme physical, chemical and biological environments, DCO researchers are making discoveries concerning carbon-bearing fluids and materials, microbial life, where carbon resides in what quantities and the nature of its fluxes. Within DCO, data science combines aspects of informatics, data management, library science, network science, computer science and physical science using supporting cyberinfrastructure and information technology. Data science is changing the way all of these disciplines work individually and collaboratively. The research data life cycle needs and requirements analysis for existing DCO projects continues by interviews structured around three broad phases of the data life cycle (acquisition, curation and preservation) and placed in the context of practices for DCO Data Management plans in alignment with the DCO Data Policy
