Description

We have focused on in situ C and N isotope analyes of super-deep diamonds for the first phase of the project.  We find clear evidence from both C and N isotopes for the recycling of crustal carbon into the transition zone. Moreover, we find the first evidence of diamond formation from both reduced and oxidized fluids in the transition zone, confirming both the importance of carbonatitic fluids as media for carbon transport in the deep Earth and also to a complex and highly varied local redox state in the slab graveyard that is the transition zone.
