The Deep Carbon Observatory and Kazan Federal University will host the Kazan Workshop on Abiotic Hydrocarbons on 13‐17 April 2013. The workshop will consider questions dealing with the possible roles of abiotic hydrocarbons in the formation of industrial oil and gas fields. The workshop will address theoretical, experimental, and field studies as well as analytical methods, sample integrity, drilling technology, and implications for energy systems. The schedule will also include an excursion to the oil region of Tatarstan.
The goals of the workshop including developing testable hypotheses for discriminating between biotic and abiotic methane and other hydrocarbons, sharing of well-characterized samples containing possible abiotic methane or other hydrocarbons that can be analyzed in multiple laboratories, sharing data on samples containing abiotic hydrocarbons, and developing new international scientific collaborations. The workshop will address theoretical, experimental, and field studies as well as analytical methods, sample integrity, drilling technology, and implications for energy systems. These discussions will take place in the context of broader themes that might include: (a) deep abiotic organic synthesis and stability; (b) maturation and migration of hydrocarbons on Earth; (c) abiogenic hydrocarbons on other planets and moons.
