After receiving the necessary permits in September, the Oman Drilling Project – an international, collaborative effort to sample the Samail Ophiolite – will officially begin operations on 1 December 2016. Located in Oman and the United Arab Emirates, the Samail Ophiolite is the world’s largest and best-exposed subaerial block of oceanic crust and upper mantle.
Phase 1 of the Oman Drilling Project will last approximately four months, finishing in late March or early April 2017. Diamond coring will take place at four sites in the southeast end of the Samail Ophiolite complex, in the following sequence:
GT2 (Wadi Gideah, mid-level gabbros)
GT1 (Wadi Gideah, lower gabbros)
GT3 (Wadi Abdah, dyke-gabbro transition)
BT1 (Wadi Mansah, listvenites and basal thrust)
Rotary drilling will take place at site BA1 (Active alteration) in early February 2017.
The scientific team will describe and log the Phase 1 cores in detail on board the Drilling Vessel (D/V) Chikyu while it is in port in Japan during July and August 2017.
Coring at sites BA1 (Active alteration) and MD1 (Crust-mantle boundary), as well as further rotary drilling, will take place during Phase 2, beginning October 2017. Core description of Phase 2 samples will likely take place on the D/V JOIDES Resolution in summer 2018.
