Meeting Report: Geological Society of America Annual Meeting 2016

The Geological Society of America Annual Meeting was held in Denver from 25-28 September 2016.

Successful collaboration between DCO’s Data Science Team and mineral evolution group inspired a series of presentations at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Denver on 25-28 September 2016. A highlight was DCO Executive Director Robert Hazen delivering the 2016 Mineralogical Society of America Roebling Medal lecture on “The co-evolution of Earth and life: insights from ‘big data’ mineralogy.” DCO colleagues organized oral and poster sessions in Hazen’s honor on “Mineralogical Evidence for the co-evolution of the geosphere and biosphere.”

These sessions featured presentations by early career scientists, including Hummer et al. on “Quantifying and visualizing Earth’s mineral chemistry through geologic time,” Ma et al. on “Showing co-relationships between elements and minerals in a three-dimensional matrix,” Golden et al. on “Building the mineral evolution database: implications for future bid data analysis,” Myer et al. on “The co-evolution of the geo- and biospheres: an integrated program for data-drive, abductive discovery in the Earth sciences,” and Hystad et al. on “Prediction of Earth’s missing minerals and the relative abundances of the mineral species on Earth: a statistical measure to characterize Earth-like planets.” These sessions represent important contributions to the application of big data and network analysis to mineralogy and petrology.

Anat Shahar, Carnegie Institution of Science, received the 2016 Mineralogical Society of America Award and delivered an award lecture, “An isotopic perspective on high-temperature and high-pressure crystal chemistry.” DCO colleague Edward Young, UCLA, chaired a session in Shahar's honor on “Non-traditional stable isotope fractionation at extreme conditions.” Reflecting Shahar’s interest in carbon in the core, Edwin Schauble, UCLA, presented “Theoretical estimates of stable isotope fractionation during core formation,” and Edward Young discussed “Iron isotope constraints on planetesimal core formation in the early solar system.”

DCO Executive Committee member Donald Dingwell (University of Munch, Germany) received the 2016 GSA Arthur Day Medal and delivered an award lecture, “Experimental volcanology: accessing the inaccessible.” Other highlights of special interest to DCO included a paper by Mike Bickle (University of Cambridge, UK) on “Metamorphic CO2 production: a neglected contribution to global carbon models, a topic he discussed at a DCO Executive Committee meeting at the Royal Society in London in 2013.
