Vacancy for a Postdoctoral position in the Alpine Cryosphere and Geomorphology Group at the Department of Geosciences, University of Fribourg, Switzerland
We are glad to announce an open position (5 years) for one PostDoc at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, Department of Geosciences, Alpine Cryosphere & Geomorphology Group (http://www.unifr.ch/geoscience/geographie) within the topic of:
Cryospheric and high mountain research
The Department of Geosciences offers an interdisciplinary, international work environment within the bilingual (German/French) University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Our group has a strong, internationally recognised expertise in monitoring and modelling of physical processes of the alpine cryosphere with a focus on climate change related impacts. Current research projects take place in the European Alps, in the Arctic/Antarctic, Central Asia, Himalayas, Andes and Greenland.
To strengthen the methodological focus we search an excellent candidate with a background in either: numerical modelling and/or remote sensing
Furthermore, we look for scientific experience and initiative in one or several of the following thematic fields, which are covered in our research group:
- modelling, monitoring and mapping of the alpine cryosphere (mainly glaciers and permafrost), including surface and subsurface processes,
- link with climatological, hydrological and/or geomorphological processes, - natural hazards.
The successful candidate will take part in the teaching curriculum (Geography on BSc level; Dynamics in Glaciology and Geomorphology on MSc level). Due to the bilingual environment, teaching on BSc level is expected in either German or French. Teaching on MSc level will be in English.
Expected skills and experience
Scientific programming and IT-support, international science network, adequate publication record. Field experience in high mountains is beneficial but not mandatory.
Applicants should have a PhD degree in geosciences, such as geography, glaciology, geophysics, hydrology, atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences or in a closely related field.
We encourage applications from scientifically motivated, independent and creative individuals with technical understanding, who enjoy working in a team. Good oral and written communication skills in English are expected. Mastering of German and/or French will be considered an advantage.
1 October 2018 (at earliest) or at convenience.
