On 7 July 2018, members of the Oman Drilling Project boarded the drilling vessel Chikyu in Shimizu port, Japan, to begin logging cores collected during Phase Two fieldwork, which took place from November 2017-February 2018. The team will spend the next two months living and working on board the ship, which houses one of the best core logging facilities in the world.

On Wednesday, 28 February 2018, members of the Oman Drilling Project field team completed Phase Two drilling. This marked the end of the drilling campaign for the project, while launching an exciting new phase of analysis and discovery. The cores collected during this second drilling phase are headed to the Japanese scientific drilling vessel D/V Chikyu.

Phase one of the Oman Drilling Project has moved to Japan, to the drilling vessel Chikyu, where detailed analysis of cores is underway. The shipboard Science Party of 67, including six Omani trainees, is performing detailed, IODP-standard logging of 1500m of core. The core logging, which began earlier this month, will continue through 15 September 2017. This is the first time D/V Chikyu core logging facilities have been used to process hardrock drilling samples.Read more here.
